Summer Writing Institute for Teachers

Maynooth University

Invitational Summer Institute

The University of California, Berkeley

Pauline completed the 2016 Summer Writing Institute for Teachers (SWIFT) in Maynooth University. In 2017 she was invited to participate in the 2017 Bay Area Writing Project’s Invitational Summer Institute at the University of California, Berkeley.

Both Institutes are modelled on the first summer institute for teachers established by visionary educator James Gray in UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Education in 1974. Gray believed that ‘the best teachers of teachers are other teachers’. He suggested that it is essential for teachers of writing to be provided with a safe space to develop their own writing and to share pedagogical approaches to writing.

In two vastly different geographical regions - Ireland and the US - Pauline had the opportunity to test the validity of Gray's theories. Her experiences on both institutes supported Gray’s beliefs and had a transformative impact on her personal, professional and creative lives. Inspired by Gray’s vision and motivated by how much she developed as a writer and teacher of writing during the Summer Writing Institute for Teachers and the Bay Area Writing Project's Invitational Summer Institute, Pauline now facilitates creative writing workshops for teachers in Education Centres and other venues throughout Ireland. Her next workshop begins on March 11th 2020 in the Bridge House Hotel, Tullamore, County Offaly. For details check here.

Contact Pauline if you would like to book her to facilitate a writing workshop for teachers in your area.
